Reading and Writing (Grades 9 and up)
The purpose of this course to get students thinking more in-depth about what they are writing, considering all sides of an argument. For example, in their reading they are likely to discover different authors with different views. It is their job as a critical writer to consider all of these views in their essays in order to demonstrate their awareness of all the issues associated with the topic of their choice. This expanded thinking will lead to more exploratory writing and deeper critical thinking skills.
Public Speaking (Grades 6, 7, 8)

Students will practice speaking clearly and persuasively about a variety of topics without a pre-written text. The class will begin with a review of foundational public speaking skills and tricks, such as making eye-contact, using appropriate hand gestures, and maintaining correct posture. The central focus of the course will be on organizing a speech to be coherent and persuasive.
C&T National Debate Team (Grades 7 and up)

These are research-intensive classes. Selected students from the classes will represent C&T at local and National High School Debate Competitions.
The SAT Prep Course (Grade 11)
This course builds student knowledge in the following areas: Critical Reading and Writing. In each area, students learn in which format they will be tested and on which skills they will be tested. For example, the Writing section consists of essays and multiple choice questions; the multiple choice questions ask students to recognize sentence errors, choose the best version of a piece of writing, and improve paragraphs. It is our goal to provide practice in all of these areas as well as familiarize students with the test taking process.
